History of Jaisalmer draws heavily from the history of the Rajputana. The city is said to be founded by one Raja Rawal Jaisal, a Bhatti Rajput ruler, in approximately 1156 A D. Legends go by that he did it on the behest of a local hermit named Eesaal. The raja choose Trikut hill as the new site for his fort. This was because he thought that his previous abode at Luderwa (16 km from present Jaisalmer) was vulnerable towards possible enemy assault.
Jaisalmer, often referred to as the “Golden City,” is a historic city located in the state of Rajasthan, India. Known for its magnificent sandstone architecture and rich cultural heritage.
Jaisalmer earned the nickname “Golden City” due to the distinct yellow sandstone used in the construction of its buildings. The sandstone, when illuminated by the sun, gives the city a golden hue, creating a mesmerizing spectacle.
The Rajput rulers of Jaisalmer played a crucial role in the history of the region. They were known for their valor, chivalry, and dedication to their land. As the guardians of the desert frontier, they defended their kingdom against numerous invasions, including those by the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughal Empire. One of the most prominent rulers of Jaisalmer was Rawal Gadsisar Singh. He is credited with expanding the kingdom’s territories and establishing Jaisalmer as a major power in the region. Under his reign, Jaisalmer prospered economically, as trade routes flourished and the city became a center for commerce and cultural exchange. The wealth accumulated through trade allowed the rulers of Jaisalmer to commission the construction of elaborate havelis (mansions) and temples within the city. These architectural marvels showcase intricate carvings, exquisite craftsmanship, and a fusion of Rajput and Islamic architectural styles. The Patwon Ki Haveli, Salim Singh Ki Haveli, and Nathmal Ji Ki Haveli are among the most famous examples of these grand structures.
Jaisalmer’s strategic location on the trade routes brought prosperity to the city, but it also made it vulnerable to invasions. The Mughal Empire made several attempts to conquer Jaisalmer, but the Rajput rulers fiercely defended their kingdom. However, over time, Jaisalmer’s fortunes declined as trade routes shifted and the importance of the desert as a trade corridor diminished. In the 19th century, Jaisalmer came under British influence, becoming a princely state under the British Raj. The rulers of Jaisalmer maintained a cordial relationship with the British, which allowed them to retain a degree of autonomy while benefiting from modernization and infrastructure development. The partition of India in 1947 marked a significant turning point in the history of Jaisalmer. The princely states were given the option to join either India or Pakistan. The rulers of Jaisalmer chose to accede to the newly independent India, and Jaisalmer became part of the state of Rajasthan.
After independence, Jaisalmer underwent a transformation as it embraced tourism as a means of economic growth. The city’s unique architecture, cultural heritage, and the allure of the Thar Desert attracted travelers from around the world. Today, Jaisalmer is a popular tourist destination, offering a glimpse into the rich history and culture of Rajasthan. In addition to the magnificent fort and havelis, Jaisalmer is also known for its vibrant festivals.
